What Is a Pocket Diaper? TOP
Pocket diapers are the newest type of diapers to hit the cloth diapering world. The first pocket diaper, Fuzzi Bunz, was created in 1998. Pocket diapers are a two piece diapering system, typically with a piece of fleece that makes up the inner portion of fabric and a waterproof layer that makes up the outermost portion. An absorbent material, or insert, is placed inside of the two pieces making the whole system act as an all in one system that keeps babies dry. Pocket diapers are very easy to use, just slide an insert into the diaper and you are ready to put it on your baby! How Many Diapers Do I Need? TOP
This depends on two things - how old your baby is and how often do you want to do the wash.
On average, newborns and infants should be changed about every 2 hours, or 10-12 times a day. Toddlers probably need to be changed about every 3 hours, or 8-10 times a day. Most people using cloth diapers wash every 2 to 3 days. Therefore, you will need about 24-36 pocket diapers. You will also most likely need at least 2 or 3 extra inserts or diaper doublers so that you can stuff your diaper with two inserts during long naps and night time. A few extra inserts are always nice to have. What Size Diapers Do I Need? TOP
Please check the size charts on our bumGenius, Fuzzi Bunz, Green Acre Design, or Happy Heinys pages. It may be necessary to measure your baby to ensure a good fit. After receiving your new diapers, always try one on with an insert before washing it to make sure it fits properly. Please remember that once the diaper is washed, it may not be exchanged or returned! What Else Do I Need? TOP
The Necessities:
*Pocket Diapers
*Inserts - One for each diaper, plus a few extras for night time.
*Wipes - Cloth wipes are great and so simple to use with cloth diapers.
*Diaper Pail
Good to Have:

Are These Diapers Hard to Wash? TOP
No! The idea of washing diapers may seem overwhelming at first, but it turns out that it truly is easy. Just throw them in the washing machine with a cold soak, then a regular wash, and regular tumble dry or hang dry. Please see our Washing Info page for more details. Do I Need to Pre-Wash My Items? TOP
Yes! Because there are several people touching our products before they reach you, we do suggest that you pre-wash everything before using them on your baby for the first time. The hemp products contain natural oils, so we suggest washing a few times prior to use. Unlike many fabrics, hemp becomes more absorbent the more it’s washed. It takes roughly 8 washes before all of the oils are removed and the hemp is fully absorbent. We do suggest that you wash new hemp separately until it is fully primed. The oils can cause repelling problems with fleece products. How Often Do I Wash My Diapers? TOP
Pocket diapers are a single use diaper. This means that the diaper and insert must be washed after each use.
On average, cloth diapering families will need to wash a load of diapers every 2 to 3 days. If you have a smaller supply of diapers, of course, you will need to wash more often. What Can I Do If My Diapers Are Stinky? TOP
First, check out our Washing Info page to get complete instructions on how to properly wash your diapers. Even when diapers are washed correctly, we have found that they do get stinky sometimes. This may be due to detergent build up, stronger urine smell in older babies, or several other reasons.
Here are a few different recommendations (these are separate things to try, don't do them all at once!):
1. Try an extra rinse. Make sure there are no bubbles left in the rinse water.
2. Add a small amount of baking soda to the soak. Then add a Downey Ball with vinegar in the wash. If you don't have a Downey Ball, add vinegar during the rinse cycle.
3. The solution that worked for us when our diapers became stinky was simple. We just added a little squirt of liquid Dawn dish soap to the soak, then washed normally. Make sure that all detergent and soap is thoroughly rinsed out. Will My Diapers Get Stained? TOP
Overall, your diapers should stay looking new and white, however, sometimes different foods, illnesses, or medications may cause your diaper to stain a bit. If this happens, the sun is the best stain remover. Take your clean, wet diaper out of the wash and hang it to dry in the sun. If the stain is stubborn, squirt it with a little lemon juice and it should come right out after drying in the sun. Can I Use Diaper Rash Cream? TOP
While babies using cloth diapers get far less diaper rashes, they can occur on occasion. It is not normally recommended to use diaper rash ointment while using cloth. We do, however, recommend Grandma El's Diaper Rash Cream. The owner of Happy Heiny's thoroughly tested it, and found it to work very well with cloth diapers. It does not stain, coat, or cause repelling, and it works well to heal baby's sensitive skin.
As always, be sure to change the diaper often and allow your baby to air dry as much as possible. How Do I Use Cloth Wipes? TOP
There are a few easy ways to use cloth wipes. You may put them in an empty disposable wipe container or any other container with a lid. Put some wipes in and add some wipe solution (Baby Bits are great!). You may also use a wipe warmer in the same way. Just add the wipes and solution in the warmer.
Another way would be to keep your wipes dry until use. Many people like to keep a spray bottle of wipe solution, or bumGenius Bottom Cleaner, to spray the wipe at changing time, or spray directly onto baby's bum and then wipe. Can I Use Pocket Diapers Overnight? TOP
Absolutely! You will need to add diaper doublers or extra inserts for more absorbency though. This is why pocket diapers are great! You choose how much absorbency your baby needs. In our family, we just slip in two inserts and we are good for the night!
For a heavy nighttime wetter, we suggest trying a Happy Heiny's Hemp Stuffin and a microfiber insert.
Hint: Put the microfiber insert on top of the hemp stuffin before putting it into the diaper, as the microfiber absorbs quicker than hemp when the baby pees. Then the hemp kicks in and absorbs a lot! |
